The permit, plainly

What you're actually earning.

Utah's barbering permit took effect January 1, 2026. Here's the straight version — no fine print buried at the bottom.

  • +What it lets you do: cut, clip, and trim with shears and clippers; shampoo and style; and shave facial and neck hair — the full classic barbering menu.
  • +How you qualify: 130 hours of approved training plus a passing score on the state barbering exam.
  • +Where you train: in-shop, registered with Utah's Division of Professional Licensing, under a licensed master instructor.
  • +Where it leads: your 130 hours carry forward — credit toward a master barber license and chemical services down the road.

Chemical services (color, perms, relaxers) require a separate permit later. City Barbers Academy covers the full 130-hour barbering-permit curriculum and exam prep. Program details reflect Utah SB 330; we'll confirm current DOPL requirements with you before you begin.
